I don’t know about anybody else, but that “Back to Black”—though it mirrors my response to the record perfectly—sure does sound, in the piano melody, like something that charted for the Supremes around about the fall of ’66, and for Vanilla Fudge a few months later, too.
Would ONE of the radio stations and critics who’ve fawned all over this clumsy pastiche have played it if the name on the cover was Bettye Lavette and the picture of a woman Bettye’s age? Maybe one; it’d be a lot better record of course.

You're right of course.When the Joss Stone train came rollin' in I figured I must be losing my ears,because it sounded like classic oversinging to me.Amy Winehouse is even worse.THIS is what passes for SOUL music these days?Forgive me,but I think I'll go put Mabel John on the turntable for awhile.....
Right on, again, Dave Marsh. I've only heard the one track "Rehab" and it sounded like some kind of faux-swinging 60s soundtrack shit. Let's put on that Bettye Lavette CD and watch everyone faint...
Totally correct, Dave...she's a poor imitation of Shirley Bassey at that (and the "I'm an addict and proud of it" schtick? Heard it before, a million times better and more interesting.) What I hate is that she's currently being peddled as a new "empowerment" icon amongst some of the neo-feminists. Personally, I just don't get it.
